HealthySteps Outcome Pilots Study

HealthySteps Outcome Pilots Study
National Office site partnerships focused on outcomes important for healthy children and families

The HealthySteps National Office at ZERO TO THREE is dedicated to making sure all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life by transforming the promise of pediatric primary care. To refine our model and drive continuous quality improvement, we launched the Outcome Pilots Study in partnership with James Bell Associates and MDRC in 2018. The study assesses our model’s influence on five outcomes important to healthy child development and family well-being.

  • Breastfeeding
  • Child social-emotional development
  • Early childhood obesity
  • Maternal depression
  • Well-child visits

We’re proud to share recent findings from our sites:

In 2019, HealthySteps improved screening for maternal depression in five months at:

  • Summit Healthcare in Arizona, where the maternal depression screening rate increased from 41% to 95%.
  • Sunset Park Family Health Center at NYU Langone, where the maternal depression screening rate increased from 31% to 60%.

In 2019, HealthySteps demonstrated improvements in breastfeeding duration at:

  • Advocate Family Medicine – Ravenswood Clinic in Chicago, where the six-month breastfeeding continuation rate increased from 61% to 65%, exceeding both the state rate (53%) and the Healthy People 2020 goal (61%).

We partnered with sites in Arizona, Illinois, and New York to learn about their well-established and innovative practices in these outcome areas to help us better understand how HealthySteps improves the lives of babies, toddlers, and their families. An Evaluation Advisory Group composed of site representatives and topical experts provides input on the Outcome Pilots and future research efforts.
