When I had my two youngest children, it felt like I was becoming a new mom all over again. My oldest is 16, but my two younger kids are close in age. Suddenly, I was back in a world of developmental milestones, new guidelines, and constant questions. Things had changed since my first experience with parenting, and I wasn’t always sure where to turn. From our very first pediatric appointment, HealthySteps stepped in and made sure I didn’t have to figure things out alone.
My HealthySteps Specialist met me right where I was.
She explained what to expect at each stage, answered questions I didn’t even know I should be asking, and gave me tools I could actually use—like clear developmental charts and guidance on feeding, speech, and routines. Appointments can go by so fast, but the HealthySteps Specialist took the time to slow things down.
“My HealthySteps Specialist gave me what the doctor didn’t always have time to—space to ask questions and real guidance about what to expect.”
They connected me with resources I didn’t even know existed.
When I started noticing that my daughter’s speech seemed delayed, she didn’t dismiss my concerns. She listened. She helped connect us to speech therapy and guided us through the process step by step. Later, when both of my younger children needed IEPs, she was there to help with the transition, paperwork, and recommendations. I didn’t have to navigate that system on my own—she showed me the way.
HealthySteps supported us during moments of real stress. During the formula shortage, the team connected me with food banks and local resources across the city. Without them, I wouldn’t have known where to look or who could help.
Just as much as the practical support, what mattered was the reassurance.
HealthySteps constantly reminded me that all kids develop differently, and that different doesn’t mean something is wrong. That message changed everything for me as a parent. Instead of panicking and blaming myself, I learned patience and confidence. Once I understood that my children were on their own timelines, I could focus on helping them thrive.
Today, my kids are doing great and continuing to make progress. Because of my experience, I now advocate for other parents who may not know where to start. HealthySteps didn’t just support my family—it empowered me to help others find the same kind of support.
“HealthySteps helped me understand that every child’s ‘normal’ looks different, and that made me a better parent.”

My name is Bianca, and I live in Washington, D.C. My family participates in the HealthySteps program, and it has truly become an integral part of our community. As a mother, having access to compassionate support, helpful resources, and people who genuinely care makes such a difference in how I show up for my children.
I’m grateful for the ways HealthySteps has helped me better understand my children’s development while also supporting me as a parent. From answering questions to connecting us with services I didn’t even know were available, the guidance we’ve received has been a blessing. I am also glad to have served two terms as a Family Advisory member.
